Every 4th of February is World Cancer Day. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about cancer and showing support. As an NDIS provider here in Melbourne, we understand that navigating healthcare can be even more challenging for people with disabilities. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be part of the fight against cancer!
This year’s theme is “Close the care gap: Access to quality cancer care for everyone.” This means ensuring everyone, regardless of their disability, has the same opportunities to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer.
We, OASES Community Carers, want to acknowledge the strength and resilience of our amazing clients, especially those who are facing cancer. We know that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.
People With Disabilities Can Get Involved
- Get informed: Learn about the different types of cancer, their symptoms, and the importance of early detection. Knowledge is power!
- Talk to your doctor: Don’t hesitate to discuss any concerns you have about cancer with your doctor. Regular check-ups are essential.
- Spread awareness: Share information about World Cancer Day and cancer prevention with your friends, family, and online communities. The more people who know, the better!
- Support organizations: Donate to organizations that support cancer research, patient care, and advocacy for people with disabilities. Every little bit counts!
Together, we can make a difference! Let’s close the care gap and ensure everyone has access to quality cancer care.
OASES Community Carers Can Help You
As an NDIS provider, we’re committed to supporting our clients with disabilities throughout their cancer journey:
- We can help you navigate the healthcare system: We can assist you with appointments, transportation, and understanding your rights and entitlements.
- We can provide practical support: We can help with things like housework, personal care, and social connection.
- We can connect you with other support services: We can help you find cancer support groups, financial assistance programs, and other resources.
For People Battling With Cancer and Disabilities
Always remember that you are strong and capable. You’ve overcome challenges in the past, and you can do it again. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many people and organizations who want to support you. Focus on what you can control. You can’t control your cancer diagnosis, but you can control how you respond to it. Take good care of yourself.
